The AIP Foundation calls on students from Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines to join the HeadsUp! helmet safety awareness contest.
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, March 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Youngsters on motorbikes have become an icon on the streets of Southeast Asia. Scenes of students riding scooters in the morning as they head to schools depict a region striving for a better future.
It also means that young people have the power to make the roads safer.
AIP Foundation, a non-profit association organization dedicated to creating a world free of accidents and fatalities on the road, launched Heads up! video production contest, inviting students to take one of the most important actions to save lives on the road: wearing a helmet.
Promote helmet culture
As the motorcycle becomes more and more popular as a major mode of transport for young people, the promotion of helmet use has become a necessary mission of the AIP Foundation.
A World Health Organization report found that South East Asia poor infrastructure and poor traffic management cost the lives of around 300,000 people a year. The WHO noted that road accidents are the leading cause of death for people aged 5 to 29. It’s a “silent endemic” that has plagued the region for decades, and the numbers are rising year by year.
But it’s still not too late, we can save the younger generation and the future they hold.
The youth-led project began to take shape in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and The Philippinesas passionate university students come together to create innovative public awareness campaigns.
Motorcycle helmets are designed to protect the wearer’s head against severe forms of traumatic brain injury. Studies show that helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 45%, brain injury by 33%, facial injury by 27% and fatal injury by 29%. In Thailandonly 45% of motorcyclists wear a helmet.
Implemented by the AIP Foundation with support from FIA Road Safety Grant program, FIA Region II and FIA Foundation, HeadsUp! is a regional public safety announcement competition for students from renowned universities. Participants will create video stories that reflect the importance of quality helmet use among young people.
Heads up! is the first platform of a regional initiative where young people can connect, learn and exchange views on the region’s road safety and the vital importance of helmets. Thanks to the competition, the region will see creative campaigns made by and adapted to the “drivers” of the future.
The winner will receive $1,000 and support to develop her video into a full-fledged campaign as part of the global launch. More details on Heads up! website.
