Daily Covid-19 toll hits new record today with 34 deaths

The Department of Public Health announced 32 new Covid-related deaths and 4,887 new infections in the past 24 hours. 2,835 of the new cases come from 2 of Bangkok’s largest prisons (below). Even with new infections in prisons subtracted from the total, Thailand added more than 2,000 new cases to Thursday’s tally.

• Another blow to the worst Covid-19 episode in Thailand, 2,835 inmates at the Bangkok remand center and the central women’s prison, 2 of the capital’s largest prisons, have now been confirmed as infected with Covid.

Anti-government protester and detainee Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul made the revelation when she was released on bail on her Facebook page, saying she contracted the virus while in detention. She said that “many inmates have infections,” forcing the Minister of Corrections to be clear with the bigger picture.

• The Thai government is set to subsidize up to 100,000 one-way plane tickets to the island once it opens.

TAT’s Yuthasak Supasorn says Phuket will attract between 30,000 and 40,000 visitors as part of its Sandbox reopening program. He said he had had discussions with Thai Airways and Thai Smile about the subsidy program – local airline brands are currently bankrupt with a clear threat of being declared bankrupt as early as next week.

Mr. Yuthasak also said that Thai tourism will “prepare” to reach a target of “3 to 4 million visitors in the fourth quarter after the reopening of 9 other tourist areas in the country.

• A new clause has been added to the Phuket restrictions extension (until May 31). They now include a specific paragraph aimed at banning gatherings of people in their homes. Obviously with THIS in mind.

Here is the new clause …

“5.2 Participation in the consumption or consumption of alcohol, in the family home or in any other place of residence, must not be frequented by strangers. In addition, gatherings or the organization of any other activity are prohibited. If the person who violates or commits this offense is a foreigner, permission to stay in Thailand under immigration law could be revoked. “
