Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal expressed the hope that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) would increase its financial assistance to various important projects in Bangladesh as well as the necessary budget support given the global uncertainty.

During a meeting with Jica President Akihiko Tanaka at the Secretariat, he recalled the very first budget support Japan provided to Bangladesh at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Minister of Finance called it historic for both countries.

“It has helped to mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic and deal with the crises resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war. Japan is gradually becoming Bangladesh’s biggest bilateral development partner,” Mustafa Kamal said.

Responding to the minister, Akihiko Tanaka said that Bangladesh is considered an important country for Jica aid. Bangladesh is also ahead of many of its neighboring countries in terms of economic and social indicators. As Bangladesh has been successful in implementing the aid provided, it has helped the country to earn a high place in the list of countries receiving Jica’s development aid.

Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Sharifa Khan, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki and Resident Representative of Jica Hayakawa were present at the meeting, among others.
